Shingle repair is the local asphalt job: a torn tab, a ridge that shed its cap, an eave that lost a course, a valley edge that eroded. It is not a polite name for a full replacement, and it is not leak diagnosis by itself. In Houston the same shingle that looks “dirty” may be algae, not storm bite. We say which.
This service is the secondary path on several area pages: Katy and Cypress after storm, Heights after leak work, The Woodlands after inspection, Sugar Land when a leak is local. Primary shingle work still happens everywhere asphalt is the lid — which is most of the west and south MPC belt and a large share of inner-loop roofs that were converted from older wood or that were always composition.
Gloeocapsa magma, the cyanobacteria the NRCA discusses on asphalt, loves north and tree-shaded slopes in this humidity. Streaks show first under pines in Memorial and The Woodlands and on any house that sits in its own shadow. Algae-resistant shingles are a Gulf product category for that reason. Repairing a few tabs on a heavily streaked field may be correct mechanically and still look uneven. We say that before we nail.
Pine pollen in spring and needles year-round pack valleys. That is debris load, not automatically a failed shingle, but a packed valley is how a good tab still leaks. We clear and then look at the underlying cut. Highways do not change shingle physics; they place the house: US-290 for Cypress, I-10 for Katy and the Energy Corridor, SH-288 for Pearland, I-45 and the Beltway for the rest of the compass.
Price drivers are how many squares (or fractions) we touch, ridge length, whether we must blend courses, and access. No dollar figure lives on this page. Call (713) 555-0148 or request a quote.
Shingle repair is the secondary service on Katy, Cypress, Heights, and The Woodlands pages because those roofs are mostly asphalt and the first question is usually storm, leak, or inspection. The repair itself is still local: a course at an eave, a cap run, a valley cut we can save. If we are blending into a field that is already a map of old patches, we say replacement is the honest page. Gulf sun fades faster on south and west slopes; algae paints the north. Matching is a conversation, not a promise of invisibility.
The Houston factor
Humid subtropical climate on the Gulf. Rain is frequent; wind-driven rain gets under a creased tab that would hold in a drier city. Hurricane season is June 1–November 30 (NOAA). Ponding is more of a low-slope problem, but a clogged valley on a steep roof behaves like a small pond after a fifty-inch-class annual rain year (station-dependent published normals).
Harvey (August 2017) soaked decks; we do not invent inch counts beyond commonly published IAH multi-day totals in the mid-thirties. Hail is less of a yearly driver than in North or West Texas. Algae (Gloeocapsa magma) is the Houston-specific shingle surface story. Clay shrink-swell can telegraph as a distorted ridge cap that looks like “bad shingles” when the deck moved. Pier-and-beam bungalows and slab ranches both wear asphalt; they do not wear it the same at the wall.
Repair versus replace on asphalt
If the field is brittle, widely creased, or already a patchwork, we send you to roof replacement. If you only need a documented condition report, use inspection. If water is in the house now, use leak or emergency.
Questions about shingle repair
Are black streaks hail damage?
Usually not. In Houston they are often Gloeocapsa magma algae on north or shaded slopes. Hail can bruise a tab, but algae is the common stain. We look at the granule and the mat, not only the color.
Can you repair one ridge without replacing the field?
Often yes, if the field is sound. A ridge that opened from wind or from clay movement can be a local cap job. We check both slopes before we call it local.
Do algae-resistant shingles stop leaks?
They slow staining. They do not seal a valley or a flashing gap. We treat them as a Gulf product category, not as leak insurance.
Will a repair match the faded roof?
Gulf sun and algae change color. We try to match. A small repair can still read as a repair. We say that up front.
When is shingle repair the wrong service?
When decking is wet, when leaks repeat across planes, or when the roof is open. Then the page you want is leak, emergency, or replacement.
